Hi! My name is Taylor Hartson, and I’m the editor-in-chief this year. I’m a junior studying sociology, psychology, and writing—probably because I hated going shopping with my mom when I was a child and always ended up people-watching over the top of my Junie B. Jones books instead. I find myself most comfortable with my nose in a book or in front of a computer reading hip-hop-inspired poetry, learning French, or tackling a new software. My dad always jokes that I’ll be in school for the rest of my life. He’s not wrong—I have plans for a couple more degrees and perhaps a career in academia, though I’ve recently picked up an interest in data visualization, combining my loves for data and design. Between being a student in three programs, the editor-in-chief of an arts publication, and a research assistant, I don’t have time for much else, but when I do, I like to spend it drinking black coffee, listening to hip-hop, and petting dogs.
Hi, I’m Cotter Koopman. I’m the Layout Editor this year, meaning I take your pieces and turn them into pages. I’m a programmer and aspiring designer, plus I love talking about all kinds of music with others. I also make music in a band as well as on my own. I work for the Student Activities Office doing a bunch of stuff under the broad umbrella of “communication and promotion.” My pastimes include playing number games on napkins and seeing how frequently I can eat Taco Bell before guilt overwhelms me.
I’m Ethan Hohn, and I’m new to Dialogue this year. I am a Strategic Communications major with a minor in Writing. Along with Dialogue, I am an active member of the Student Activities Board and Vice President of the Film Arts Committee. After Calvin, I’m hoping to go into a career in film preservation. While I study film and poetry outside of class, I am also very fascinated with all other forms of art that are included in Dialogue. I especially love seeing how art and popular culture mend together. I’m excited about working on Dialogue because I’m excited about art and I think art at Calvin is not only important, but very much alive.
Hey everyone! My name is Jacob Bol and I’m currently a sophomore studying Psychology with a minor in who-knows-what. I’m also currently a part of the Artist Collaborative here at Calvin College. This is my first year on the Dialogue staff and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Going into Calvin, I wasn’t sure about whether or not I wanted to do art, graphic design, and/or music as a major/minor, but I knew for sure that I wanted to find ways to be involved with all of those in some way. There are some (probably just myself) who would say that I’m an art conglomerate. I’ll get really into music for a few weeks, and then graphic design for another few, then photography, then writing, and then whatever else there is to offer. So, I really love all forms of art, which is one of the reasons why I was so interested in Dialogue and it’s inclusion of all genres of art. This year, I’m looking forward to making posters, visuals, and designing layout for the final product of Dialogue. I’m also excited to see the ways that this experience will shape my personal growth as an artist.
I'm Madeleine Wiering, and this is my 3rd year on Dialogue. I'm studying Graphic Design, and Dialogue has been a great way for me to get creative and meet cool people. Some of my favorite things are furry blankets, extra hot cappuccinos, and sunglasses. Lately, I've been getting back into journaling, and it's the best part of my day most days. The next thing I want to get better at is doodling!
Hi, my name is Elyse Rhoades and I am currently a Sophomore studying Art and Business. I'm from the Indianapolis area and I enjoy going on runs, watching Star Wars, and going to Sephora way too much. This is my first year being on Dialogue staff and I am super excited to get involved with everything that Dialogue does here at Calvin. I love how diverse and inclusive to all forms of art Dialogue is. Art has always been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I am primarily a painter but this year I am trying to get my feet wet in the area of Graphic Design. I hope to be able to learn and utilize new skills this year through the Dialogue journal as well as gain experience in design and page layout.
My name is Molly Vander Werp, and I am new to the Dialogue staff this fall. I am a Neuroscience and Writing double major. (No, I do not plan on writing science text books.) I think art is cool as all get out, and I’m especially drawn to creative writing. Especially poetry. My favorite word is lovely (it’s a lovely word), and I’m fairly certain that J.D. Salinger and I are long lost soul mates. Also a big fan of: surround sound, Cosmic Brownies, and the color green; ginger tea, The Book Thief, and the number 13. I can’t stand exclamation points or adverbs; however, I am very very very excited to be working on Dialogue this year! Creative expression is good, and true, and beautiful; it is simultaneously human and a reflection of the divine. I am both thrilled and humbled to contribute to an outlet for creative expression at Calvin.
Hey! I’m Katie Harrelson, a first- year student at Calvin, and this is my first year at Dialogue! I’m mainly going to be helping assist in any ways I can with getting Dialogue ready. I’m super excited to be involved and can’t wait to see where Dialogue takes me! I am planning to study graphic design but that could change to english or history or really anything. I am interested in how I can integrate all of these things into a major or job. I enjoy long walks on the beach, with my dog, Bonnie, the greatest basset hound to have ever lived. Besides that, I like dope music and movies.
Hi! I'm Katie Ulrich, and I am this year's Dialogue social media extraordinaire. I'm a senior studying Strategic Communication and International Development Studies. I'm from Harrisburg, PA, but Grand Rapids feels like home to me more and more each day. I'll take any chance I can get to travel somewhere new, and I tend to drink an obscene amount of coffee. I hope to use this little life that I've got to pursue justice and equality for people across the globe. I'm excited to be a part of Dialogue this year and to get to be part of connecting students to be part of this incredible journal.
I’m James Andrew Gilbert—I go by Andrew though. I grew up in Brazil, and have since childhood been in love with art. It started with books, I loved reading fantasy. Then, the visual arts appeared in my life first through Van Gogh. When we learned about him, in 2nd grade, we copied one of his paintings—I did one of his self-portraits. I felt deeply connected with him, as if he had done everything I wanted to do, or been everything I wanted to be. In some way his craziness, depression or whatever it was, made it even more appealing for me to be an artist—don’t ask me how that was appealing. Since then I haven’t stopped in my quest to do great art. Recently I developed a passion for film and animation, which has landed me with a Bachelor Fine Arts major with writing and film minors. For Dialogue I assist with whatever I can—usually that being graphic design and layout of the magazine. I also end up being the one hanging up posters in the dorms since everyone on staff seems to not be from that area.
I’m Patrick Jonker, a newcomer to the Dialogue staff, and a junior studying biochemistry and philosophy. I currently jury for Dialogue in music, and plan to join more juries for the upcoming issue. Dialogue is important to me because I have found that after 19.89 years of life, art still surprises and challenges me. Art has changed my ideals, my priorities, and has definitely become my passion through listening, reading, and seeing. Art provides an honest platform for people to express real things, and in our culture it seems like “being real,” and telling it like it is, has become discouraged. Just look at our president if you want a glaring example. Dialogue is giving kids going through a crazy 4-5 years a chance to be honest with themselves and with each other. That’s beyond cool: it’s necessary. Anyways, some other stuff I do is I play cello and guitar, write poetry when I have time, and read way too much Cormac McCarthy. I really love music, so I’m usually on my phone in the library with my headphones in, when I should be studying. Ask me what I’m listening to and I’ll probably nerd out for you. I also really, really like that old animated version of Robin Hood with the foxes. I watch it every day. Not really. I wish I did.
I’m Annake Vande Brake, and I’m a freshman currently majoring in Film Production in hopes of making documentaries someday. I am super excited to be a part of Dialogue this year and enjoy designing graphics for our social media pages. I love art in all forms and am awestruck by an artist’s message portrayed through their specific medium. In my spare time, I can be found in my dorm listening to Pandora radio, building a solid thesis on why the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise should be considered art or critiquing the color of the sky.
Hi, I’m Emma Carpenter. I serve on the layout team/help make posters and illustrations for Dialogue. I’m a senior studying graphic design, but I also enjoy drawing, Wes Anderson films, and sharing trippy GIFS on Facebook of people eating shoes. I guess I channel some sort of grandma vibes, mainly because 50% of my clothes are dated, old lady sweaters I buy from Salvation Army, and I have two cats back home in China, named Machiavelli and Shakespeare—they’re great, except for the hair that gets all over my nice grandma sweaters.
